I came across an interesting article today on the Daily Telegraph (Saturday March 14 2009 pg. 4) titled “Buying up a US home for $1.50″. With this current financial crisis in the US, I’m not surprised houses are selling for as little as $1.50. Here’s the extract of the article:
BARGAIN-HUNTING Australians are raiding the US housing market where huge family homes are for sale for just $1.50.
Foreign buyers are travelling to US foreclosure hotspots where properties are listed for $US1000 ($1500), $US500 ($750) – even as little as $US1.
One prominent dealer in Detroit – a town crippled by the collapsing car industry – has sold properties to Australian buyers for just $US3000 ($4500). Vacuum cleaner manufacturer Theo Szinger, 67, of Brisbane, cashed in his superannuation and plunged it into Detroit property last year. He has not looked back, snapping up six properties for as little as $5000.
“You ca’t even buy a secondhand car for that,” Mr Sziner said. His latest buy, a $16,000 home in such good condition it did not even need a paint job, came with a $10,000 rates bill but he was still thrilled with the deal.
Mr Szinger is among the enterprising Aussies who have swopped on the ailing US home market where homes worth $200,000 18 months ago are going for a few thousand dollars.
“We’ve had a handful. Typically, they have been paying $US3000 to $US5000,” Detroit foreclosure specialist Mike Shannon said. Mr Shannon said he had more than 100 lower quality homes listed in the Detroit metropolitan area for sale at just $US1.
But before you plunge into buying a property in the US, make sure you talk to you lawyer and accountant to ensure you’ve looked at all the laws and regulations with owning properties overseas.
Does anyone know what are the ongoing costs associated with these bargain houses?

If you’re looking for cheap flights then your first stop will be to visit jetstar. They have recently announcement their “price beat guarantee”:
If you find a published internet airfare on another airline that is lower than the lowest available comparable Jetstar fare on Jetstar.com, call us to book with Jetstar and we will beat the other airline’s fare by 10% (provided we can verify the lower fare when you call to book).
The comparable fare must be for a one way direct flight on the same route at a comparable time.
Another airline’s fare which has less than 20kg checked baggage allowance or excludes checked baggage allowance is comparable to Jetstar’s JetSaver Light fare and a fare which includes at least 20kg checked baggage allowance is comparable to Jetstar’s JetSaver fare.

I was sent this information by a friend of mine so I thought I would share it with you all, I’ll definitely be shopping at Coles this Friday:
Coles Media Release:
Coles will donate this Friday’s (13 Feb) profits from its 750 stores nationally to the Government’s Bushfire Appeal Fund in partnership with the Red Cross.
Customers will also be able to donate to the Victorian Bushfire Appeal Fund at all Coles stores. Donations can be made at all Coles supermarket checkouts from today.
Coles Managing Director Ian McLeod said the bushfire tragedy had touched a number of Coles team members, some of whom have lost loved ones in the fire, and a number who have lost their homes.
“Like everyone in the community, we’ve been shocked by the devastation these fires have wrought, and we extend our deepest sympathies to those who’ve suffered loss in this terrible event,” Mr McLeod said.
Mr McLeod said the size of this Friday’s donation would depend on customer support, but could be several million dollars.
“We hope Australians will help us make this Friday’s donation as substantial as possible.”
Coles has been helping ground level relief agencies over the weekend, providing essentials such as food, water and toiletries, and will continue to provide additional local support as needed.

I was doing some research on Netbooks/Laptops because I needed to buy one for my sister as a present, I began by searching on the net and going to popular comparison sites like shopbot.com.au and myshopping.com.au but it only really gave the recommended retail price rather than the sale price. Luckily someone had kindly posted some laptop sales on Squeak.com.au which was perfect timing! JB Hi-Fi, The Good Guys, Myers, David Jones and Harvey Norman were listed on the site so I checked those out and the prices were good but some of the retailers were only selling particular brands like Sony, Toshiba, HP etc. Myers had the Asus EeePC 7″ for $300 and they then reduced the price on boxing day to $249! That was a steal! But my sister wanted a 13″ laptop so I went around looking for more sales. I ended up purchasing the Asus F6A 13.3″ Laptop from MSY which they had for $1179 which is by far the cheapest around, the recommended retail price was over $1500 and Bing Lee had it on their website for $1600 but it did have better specs. MSY is a small franchise that only have a few stores around Australia so most people don’t know about them. The service is not that great but if you know what you want then you have no problems. It was good to know that these small stores can compete with the big retailers the only problem is knowing when their running sales. I’ll make sure that if I hear about their sales I’ll post it on Squeak.com.au – the sales search engine.
The learning from this was that it definitely pays off to shop around and find out which places are running sales, remembering that you don’t have to go to the big retailers to grab a good deal. The small stores can compete! So the next time you’re looking to buy a gift or something for yourself, make sure you take a look at whose running a sale on Squeak.com.au and make sure you grab it at the best price.
