What is a Netbook?

I previously posted a blog about searching for Netbooks / Laptops sales, it became clear from a few visitors that they didn’t know what a Netbook is… Originally they thought I had mis-typed it for Notebook but do not be mistaken a Netbook is something different and very specific.

The definition for a Netbook from Wikipedia is: “A netbook is a light-weight, low-cost, energy-efficient, highly portable laptop suitable for web browsing, email and general purpose applications. Netbooks trade features, processing power and the ability to run resource-intensive operating systems — to achieve their small form factor, low weight and affordability.”

The typical netbook weighs approximately 1-2 kilos, has a screen size of 7 to 12 inches, offers a wireless Internet connection, runs Microsoft Windows XP or GNU/Linux, uses an Intel Atom chip, doesn’t have a CD or DVD rom and costs less than $1000.

Netbooks are geared towards users who spend alot of their time on the web — also known as Cloud computing. In general most of these users use applications such as online gaming, social networking sites such as Facebook, free web applications such as Google Calendar or photo-hosting sites such as Flickr.

Hope this helps!
